174 bus - Harold HillS

The 174 on its way to Harold Hill in 1952. Photo from Alan B. Cross

Danny Silver:

'The first thing that I noticed was the buses which went from Romford to Harold Hill and only came every half an hour. And I was used to a bus every minute back in London. I found that if I went to a meeting (Danny was trade union activist) in London then we went into the business straight away, but there it was, How are you? How's your garden? How's this, How's that? It took ages to start the meeting. The slowness showed itself in all aspects.'
