'We had a big committee and once a year we went door-to-door.
We had a social committee as well which used to hold events, which used
to hold dances and events for the kids. The lady next door and her now
deceased husband used to be the pearly King and Queen of Harold Hill. The
money we raised was put into a fund that was used to help families in dire
circumstances, to buy second hand furniture and the rest. But primarily
the money was used to fight the bureaucracy.
I was a member of many committees and a member of the Labour Party at the time.
The estate was then owned by the GLC. We had a massive campaign to get the
Briar Road community halls built.'
