Mods in Harold Hill
Sixties Harold Hill mods

Geoff Maynard:

'The introduction to the scene was at the Wykham Hall in Romford market on Tuesday and Saturday at the disco. Then the Willow Rooms on a Friday. Sunday nights were suited up for the Ilford Palais. Sometimes there was a trip to the Basildon Locarno.

At first these were on buses and trains, then on scooters, then in cars.

The new affluence meant there was always a job, and teenage kids could aspire to own a motor car - what a huge difference from their parents teenage years. My Dad rode a bike to Dagenham every day right into the early 60's. No wonder there was such an age-divide.

There had never been a youth subculture till the teds/mods/rocker - I reckon we must have scared the hell out of them.'
