We arrived from the Newbury, Berks in October 1955 - and settled in Priory Road - our house was on the top of the 'Hill - as this was a new part of the Estate - with big houses, we were known as "the posh 'ouses" - and I having spent my earlier years in the West country, had never heard "Cockney" -so I was known as the "posh girl" from the "posh 'ouses".

I went to Dycourts Junior - a long walk from Priory Rd - down Whitchurch Rd and then up Dagnam Park Drive - then I went on to Quarles Sec.Mod - there we had the famous Miss Knapton as our headmistress and Mrs MacGowan as our form mistress who instilled in us the love of English/literature and the French language. I spent 4 years there and ended up as a Head Prefect. Mrs MacGowan put me on a path of theatre and even today I still perform in our local English language theatre group situated in Tel Aviv, Israel.

My memories are of long summer nights, us kids playing hide and seek with the kids from the "childrens' homes" which were situated around Priory Road. Crossing over my fence to the fields and into the woods - sometimes taking a short cut to Quarles - in those days one could easily go byoneself into those woods and surroundings without even thinking about any dire consequences.

My dad was a local Labour councillor and a keen gardener and I used to enjoy going with him to the local horticultural society just off Goosehays Drive. My dad was also a warden at the Harold Hill United Synagogue - we had approx 100 families of Jewish faith when I came to Harold Hill in '55.

In 1977 my dad was one of the organizers for the outdoor party on the green opposite Priory Grove for the Queen's Silver Jubuilee.

Memories - the walks and bicycle rides up to South Weald, Noak Hill - memories of the shops at Whitchurch Road, my Saturday job behind the sweet counter at Woolworths at Hilldean (when I was a schoolgirl).

Our doctor was Dr. Feldman - a very kindly man in Petersfield Avenue. I moved away in 1973 and emigrated to Israel but my mum lived in the same house until 1999 when she passed away and in 2000 I sold the house in Priory Road.

One of best memories of Harold Hill was that it was a garden estate - most of the residents took great pride in their gardens.
