I lived on Harold Hill from 1950 when I was nine months old to when I got married in 1973. I lived in Wednesbury Gardens just off St Neots road. I can remember how bright and clean everywhere was because there were few cars in those days. I went to Meads Infants and Juniors and Harrowfield Secondary Modern in my senior years. As a child I used to play football with my mates on the empty land at the bottom of my road. The other side of the field was the brook. Our family doctor was Dr Mulkern (I think I got the spelling right). His practice was in a house in Retford Road. He was a brilliant, caring doctor. At one time there was also a dentist in the same house. I used to go to Hilldene shops with my mum. I was a member at the Albemarle Youth Club and remember doing Archery in the field next to it. I remember the 'lemonade man' who used to come once a week. The 'paraffin man' and the 'shellfish man' who used to come on Sundays. |
